"Polluted Beach Pin-ups" Dudes attempt to be political by using women's bodies

A new attempt to bring awareness to the gulf oil spill as been revealed: using women's bodies to promote some sort of consciousness raising in a way that will induce boners. Yes, some dudes decided it was a really cool idea to create “polluted beach pin-ups” and put them in a calendar. The calendar features thin, stereotypically “beautiful” women in string bikinis sprawled out along the oil stained rocks where the largest man-made environmental disaster took place. Some women are looking at the camera with sultry eyes while garbage hangs off their torsos; others are arching their backs among the polluted earth…

This was brought to my attention via. Facebook, through a website called “Trend Hunters.com” – Not something I typically surf around for. There is a brief passage underneath the slide show of women’s photographs and a photo of a dude in a cowboy hat (likely the dude who wrote it)

“The Surfrider Foundation’s new calendar of polluted beach pin-ups is one of the most effective ocean pollution ads that I have ever seen. This calendar features beautiful women on highly-polluted beaches. It’s a far cry from the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition.
The beaches are filthy and the women are beautiful in this calendar of polluted beach pin-ups. Hopefully men and women take notice of this calendar and use it as a wake-up call to keep our oceans clean. "

Obviously I have some complaints.

First of all, how is this advertisement effective? The photographs simply include scantly clad women posing in pollution. How is this some radical, political statement against the oil spill? Is it the fact that girls you’d like to have intercourse with appear aware of massive environmental catastrophes? I doubt that.

Is it because they allow some refreshing contrast for your dude-vision? Seriously. Nothing chaps my ass more than liberal males who think they are making a political statement by using women like mere objects to promote their supposed “political perception” - its utter bullshit.

Also, it’s not a far cry from sports illustrated. Why? Because no one is paying attention to the oil, pollution or litter washed up – they are staring at the women, dissecting them and turning them into butts and breasts while developing boners - the same thing they would do while reading a Sports Illustrated issue.

“The beaches are Filthy and the women are beautiful”, and your point is? Nothing! This is just another hollow attempt for the Bill Mahers out there to pat themselves on the back and say, “gee, I really care about the environment!” They get to pretend to be political while being blatantly misogynistic, the world is a better place!

It's so effective, in fact, that the assholes over at BP leaked in their designer jeans just looking at it. All this calendar does is attempt to sexy up the gulf. The photographs that actually raise awareness are the ones that present the reality – not the fantasy these dudes would like to create; the photos of dying animals, polluted waters and extreme environmental damage. However, using women’s bodies in attempts to be political is not remotely surprising to me – PETA does it all the time!

They claim this calender will wake people up! It will make them more aware of the gulf (because, seeing the oil drenched birds did not wake them up enough) and it will force them from their couch (once they have finished jerking off) and be come politically conscious citizens who want to actually do something!!!

I smell bullshit.

  1. Perhaps the calendar is so appealing to these people because the women appear among garbage and filth—that is, after all, the opinion that they no doubt hold of women.
