I love opening up a sociology text to the gender and sexuality section and realizing that asexuals, two-spirited individuals and intersex individuals are left out. However, the book has numerous special pages and sections dedicated just to trans politics, "post structural" ideas of gender and gay men's liberation. I guess the term "lesbian" must be passé now, too...why are women so hated?
Anyway,
You know what I did? I dropped the class.
I don't take part in classes that ignore groups of people part of sexual minorities and promote white male academic agendas like Foucault and co.
Fuck.
Ironically when I find myself in that situation it never occurs to me to drop the class. I just mouth off about the missing pieces, and present additional material to classmates and my professors... Let's just say I've gotten into a lot of trouble over things like this, lol.
ReplyDeletei'm so bad with confrontation, and the prof is this very intimidating man, also, he wrote the textbook himself. If it was another text, i would feel different as i would think the prof could disagree with the book or include it on his own. The text is quite recent, too.
