PoMo Prof Says Lady Gaga is "Feminist"

My PoMo prof made me cringe during her lecture today. I walked into class and overheard her talking to two young dudes about post modernism. I couldn't believe my ears when she said, "Lady Gaga is feminist, she has post modernist themes in her music video, Telephone." YES I'm SERIOUS. That fucking video is FEMINIST apparently. Why? Because it has a heteronormative male fantasy of lesbianism! How shocked am I that a self-righteous, self-proclaimed PoMo 'feminist' said this? Not very.

She claimed that Lady Gaga is simply Post Modern in general. How can she declare such an absolute truth? She believes that Gaga's wearing of 'dead kermit the frogs' around her neck is a comment on the absurdity of wearing fur. O Rly?

I didn't get that at all. But no no, she believes all of Gaga's attire choices are postmodern statements about society. She also pointed out that besides the clearly feminist lesbian approach to her video telephone, Gaga also made a comment about commodities by wearing coca cola cans as curlers. Yes, Gaga is the spokesperson for capitalist critiques! I mean, she doesn't just have millions of dollars or anything. She must really give a shit about consumerism...

Now, i have nothing against Gaga, i find some of her tunes to be catchy, but to claim that she's some feminist is completely fucking stupid. Prancing about inducing boners and giving a heterosexual fantasy of lesbianism is not feminist. But this whole post modern shit really is about white culture to me. It looks at the lack of truth, right? So it's all fun here to say shit isn't "reality" but in the real world, outside of the white priv. bubble, shit happens that is fucked up.

But of course, she asks us to look at female genital mutilation differently. We can't just see it as wrong, because that would be just far too absolute, wouldn't it?
It's like she can't see how female genital mutilation can have nasty implications for women as a class, not just individuals. It seems she is unable to think outside of her perception of reality.

What bothers me the most, however, is the fact that she spews her PoMo rhetoric AS a truth and thus doesn't teach us objectively but subjectively. For a professor to do this is just disingenuous and stupid. I mean, she can be as PoMo as she likes, but to assume that it is reality is self-righteous. I just hope that the women in the class, who are mostly just out of high school, don't buy into this whole fun feminist bullshit.

And i'm done with that rant.

  1. I've got a pomo TA for my Women in Pop Culture class. This is my second attempt at this class. I have never made it past the first day; I keep getting incredibly annoyed with the TA. She showed us pictures of Nicki Minaj squatting and Paris Hilton crawling on a table in her under wear and said that she thinks that "they're awesome, yay girl power." I'm not kidding, that's what she said!!!! Help!!!! Where are all the rad fems in this school?!
