Wow, what's the blanket statement for Boner Killer! You're such a dirty man-hater, what about teh menz feelings? How will teh menz feel when you make such broad generalizations, GOD...
Well, today I was walking down the main hallway on campus and I was walking in front of two obnoxiously loud young men. The men were complaining about school work and swearing loudly. The short one said something like, "Fuck! I need to focus on school, man!" and the other one laughed. The short one then stated very loudly, "How am I supposed to focus on school with all these fucking bitches around"
Then it hit me.
These brahz are revealing what many university/college brahz are thinking when they go into the college pub to pick up women, or rather "bitches". I've been approached by creepy dudes, and it's always the same degrading bullshit. This is the mentality for many, many young men these days...the ones who have been brought up with porn and television sets for babysitters...
They don't see women as fully human but rather degraded, humiliated "things" that do not deserve to be called their proper name. These brahz and even some young women are taught by the porn they consume and by the cultural climate at large, to think of women as "bitches" or "whores." After all, all popular media portrays women in a way that is sexist, classist, heterosexist and racist.
The media hates women and it shows.
What boggles my mind, however, is how these men actually believe all their female peers want to take them home. Most people don't get turned on by some dood-bro calling women as a class, "bitches"
I felt a warm sensation sweep over me. I felt rage sink into the pit of my stomach and I turned around and shot a nasty look. They weren't looking, I'm sure...too busy pretending to act like women want them...I mean, what woman could resist such a man?
I bitterly wished he would fall down the stairs.
I am so sorry you had to deal with such blatant misogyny head on BK.
ReplyDeleteSounds very similar to my uni, except usually the women are egging them on and talking about how dumb feminists are (seriously, I heard this conversation not even a row behind me in a lecture hall) - IMHO an example of how Americanised Australian education social systems have become.
Jesus, That is awful!!! How depressing. I have women in my women's studies classes who laugh when sexist ads are shown for us to critique. It's horrifying.
ReplyDeleteHow goddamn depressing!!
BK, I love your blog. I really enjoy your writing style and find myself nodding in agreement with your posts! I've recently gone back to school and am majoring in women's studies. I've been faced with a lot of idiot doodz and some ignorant young girls as well in my classes. I enrolled in a Women in Pop Culture class expecting a critical view of women's roles in tv/film/ads, etc. What I got was a classroom full of people who stated that their favourite show was Jerseylicious and a TA that wanted to discuss the feminist overtones of Sex and the City. I dropped the class that night! It'd be nice to have some allies at school but so far, I have not met any like minds. Wish you went to my school!
ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you like my blog, thank you :)
That really sucks about your class, I would be just as upset, no doubt. I find it is hard to meet like minded people, too...There's seriously no feminists around me either, maybe a few, but i don't know many. It sucks!
I hope you can find a class that works out better :( that is too bad!
"the ones who have been brought up with porn and television sets for babysitters..."
ReplyDeleteHey, as always I love the gutsiness and clarity of your writing, so please please take this in the spirit of enlightenment because that's how I intend it - but this statement inadvertently buys into the mra bullshit that mothers are not doing their job properly and are therefore contributing to the breakdown of society. There was a lot of this sort of talk around the time of the second wave. It holds women responsible for men's violence.
Apublicblogging,
ReplyDeleteHi, I never intended to bring mothers into this.
Most mothers and fathers and guardians do not intend to allow their children to view porn, it often happens outside of the home...it's everywhere. This wasn't about how they were raised, but rather, the society that they are raised in. For example, I was exposed to pornography outside of the home when I was younger, actually from someone's dad leaving it out...Most young boys I knew growing up looked at it without anyone having an idea about it. They weren't free-range on their computers or something. This is merely a societal thing, I meant. I am sorry you took it to imply parenting methods, but it was not intended to do so.
Even though to have to hear something as horrid and as sexist as that, I don't think it should come as too much of a surprise. Can we expect anything less when living in a male dominated society? By now we should all know that male domination equals sexism, racism and plenty of other forms of oppression.
ReplyDeleteThis type of behavior should encourage you to become an even more radical feminist and make you even more determined to destroy male supremacy.
Also it should encourage us to reach out to brainwashed women and educate them about the evils of male domination.
